Ohn the Gorse ... revelation

As a child I played in briars and gorse
Exploring tales of ghaels, picts and norse.
Their yellow flowers always teasing
But their prickles not so pleasing

Gypsies gathered some, I had to inquire;
Was told they were best to ignite a fire
To release their scent to clean the soul,
And arouse steam from their sacred bowl.

One teased me, invite me to see how they dance;
Flickering, sparking evoking a trance.
I saw more than they say a child should see;
Was told that it's all omen of who to be.

Like all people I know I went to school
to learn, they say, or act the fool.
Reading and writing is indeed useful today,
But among the gorse I learned how to play.
